Eligible applicants are South Dakota public schools, Bureau of Indian Education schools, or tribally controlled organizations that serve Native American students in grades 9–12 and can provide current enrollment data from the South Dakota Department of Education.

Applications require a risk-assessment narrative detailing how the program will handle cultural knowledge protocols, field safety on reservation lands, and coordination with tribal law enforcement for off-school activities. Reviewers examine whether the applicant has an existing memorandum of understanding with at least one South Dakota tribal college or the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. Budgets must allocate funds according to South Dakota’s per diem rates for travel to remote western counties and must account for winter-weather delays that extend program timelines.

The South Dakota Native Science Program meets these requirements by embedding traditional ecological knowledge within field experiences on or adjacent to reservation lands.
