The skills program addresses both distance and seasonal constraints by partnering with indoor simulators at regional technical institutes during winter months.

Applicants from counties outside the Sioux Falls and Rapid City metropolitan areas receive automatic priority because 67 percent of the state's high-school girls live in these lower-density regions yet have access to fewer than 40 total junior golf programs statewide. Urban applicants must demonstrate that existing school-team resources do not fully cover equipment or travel costs.
Logistical Barriers Specific to South Dakota
Transportation between towns often exceeds 90 miles one way on two-lane highways, and many districts lack activity buses after 4 p.m. The program therefore reimburses mileage or arranges shared transport through cooperating golf courses listed by the South Dakota Golf Association.
Readiness Requirements
Eligibility requires documented 30 hours of golf activity verified by a course professional or school coach plus enrollment at an accredited South Dakota postsecondary institution. South Dakota differs from North Dakota and Nebraska because its single governing body for higher education requires all awards to route through the Board of Regents centralized portal rather than individual campus aid offices.
