South Dakota's Heritage Livestock Preservation Program directs resources toward maintaining populations of Red Poll cattle, Navajo-Churro sheep, and American Milking Devon cattle on farms east of the Missouri River. Producers also face higher per-head feed costs during winter months because heritage breeds exhibit lower feed-conversion ratios than commercial lines under confined conditions. Funding supports purchase of foundation stock, construction of winter housing suited to lower-frame animals, and record-keeping systems that track pedigree and production traits. Applicants must demonstrate at least five years of prior livestock management experience and commit to maintaining a minimum herd size for ten years. Performance verification occurs through annual submission of breed-association registry reports.
South Dakota's climate produces greater winter temperature swings than neighboring Nebraska, requiring explicit cold-stress housing specifications absent in southern plains programs. Transportation infrastructure consists of county roads with load limits that restrict semi-trailer access for nine months each year.
