Women artists in the nine western counties face additional limits from distance to commercial suppliers and limited access to fabrication equipment. The state has no dedicated artist residency facilities west of the Missouri River.

The South Dakota Women's Art and Activism Program supplies stipends calibrated to replace 3-6 months of tourism wages, verified through prior tax returns. Recipients must complete work without organizational co-signers.
