Fellowship supporting Indigenous Artists and Culture‑Bearers in South Dakota (USA)
GrantID: 21480
Grant Funding Amount Low: $10,000
Deadline: Ongoing
Grant Amount High: $10,000
Summary
This fellowship supports Indigenous artists and culture‑bearers across the United States who are working to deepen their creative practice, strengthen their cultural roots, or build their careers as artist‑entrepreneurs. It is designed for individuals (rather than organizations or small businesses) whose work is grounded in Native traditions or communities and who wish to invest in their artistic growth, business development, or cultural leadership.
Eligibility is limited to artists who are at least 18 years old, reside in the U.S., and are enrolled members of, or can document lineal descent from, a federally or state‑recognized tribe, or are Alaska Native or Native Hawaiian. The program is not open to applicants who are currently enrolled in a degree‑granting academic program, and applicants may only apply to one fellowship track at a time. Applicants must also have completed any prior reporting obligations if they’ve received past funding from the same sponsor.
Award recipients receive a one‑year fellowship that provides a significant unrestricted grant—typically around ten‑thousand U.S. dollars—along with professional development, mentorship, and peer‑networking opportunities. The funds can be used flexibly by the fellow to advance their career, build capacity, or sustain artistic practice; however, projects solely tied to advanced academic work or large multi‑performer productions may not be the best fit.
Application cycles usually open in the summer and close in mid‑summer (for example June–July). A new cohort is selected annually, and fellows participate in the program for the full‑year cycle following selection. This opportunity is ideal for Native artists who are ready to invest in their work, build long‑term momentum, and be part of a culturally grounded peer network.
